Kerala Style Thoran Recipe for Onam Sadya

Thoran is a simple yet flavorful dry vegetable stir-fry made with grated coconut – an essential side dish in every Onam Sadya. This classic Kerala-style Thoran recipe can be made with cabbage, beans, carrots, or a mix of your favorite veggies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped cabbage (or any vegetable of choice)
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  2. Add chopped green chilies and curry leaves.
  3. Add the chopped vegetables, turmeric, and salt.
  4. Stir well, cover, and cook for 5-6 minutes until soft.
  5. Mix in grated coconut and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Serve hot with steamed rice as part of your Onam Sadya.
